Visionworks Celebrates
World Sight Day 2023
How to Participate on Thursday, October 12th, 2023
Nothing is more important to the Visionworks team than your eyesight and health. That's why we are proudly participating in World Sight Day this year. World Sight Day began over 20 years ago, advocating for the importance of eye health and access to vision care for people across the globe. Together, we can raise awareness of eye health and vision impairment issues. Global eye health starts with you. Here's how you can participate in World Sight Day 2023.
What is World Sight Day?
World Sight Day is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness or IAPB. Taking place annually on the second Thursday of October, this international day of awareness aims to focus attention on the global issue of eye health. This year, World Sight Day falls on October 12th.
World Sight Day became an official IAPB event in 2000. Since then, it has been observed and celebrated in many different ways in countries around the globe. In 2020, Queen Elizabeth II brought the observance to the United Kingdom—and worldwide participation continues to grow. Over 150 IAPB member organizations support World Sight Day, including major eye care nonprofits, professional ophthalmology and optometry groups, hospitals and corporations. They come together to fight avoidable blindness and visual impairments. The main goals of World Sight Day member organizations are to raise public awareness of vision impairment as an international public health issue, ask governments to designate funds for national blindness prevention and educate the general public on eye health.
What is the IAPB?
The IAPB is the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. It was founded in 1975—and the organization brings together more than 150 organizations in over 100 countries to promote advocacy, knowledge and access to eye care services. The IAPB envisions a world in which everyone has equal access to quality eye care and treatment.
Why is eye health important?
Eye health has a significant impact on education, employment and quality of life. While most people experience eye health-related issues during their lifetimes, over one billion people worldwide have no access to adequate eye care services. Inadequate care can lead to preventable vision impairments and even blindness.
#LoveYourEyes
This year, the theme of World Sight Day is #LoveYourEyes. The IAPB and World Sight Day Global Partners want to encourage everyone to think about the importance of their own eye health. To address the bigger picture of global eye care, we all need to take responsibility for our own eyes. Global eye health starts with you!
5 Ways to Participate in World Sight Day
Loving your eyes is all about taking care of them and encouraging others to do the same. There is a beautiful world out there, so we want to make sure we can all see it clearly. Here are five ways you can participate in World Sight Day this year and #LoveYourEyes.
Schedule an Eye Exam
The best way you can participate in World Sight Day is to schedule your own eye exam. In 2023, the IAPB is working on getting over five million people to take the pledge and schedule their eye exam appointments. At Visionworks, we make it easy to schedule an eye exam online with a doctor at a store location near you. So take the pledge and schedule your appointment today.
Take the pledge in Honor of World Sight Day
Share the Pledge on Social Media
Once you've scheduled your eye exam, tell your friends and family that you are dedicated to protecting your eye health. Share the pledge on social media and encourage your followers to do the same. Tell us why you #LoveYourEyes! Don't forget to tag @visionworks_eyewear and @IAPB in your posts.
Educate Yourself on Eye Health
A critically important aspect of eye health is education. For example, many people don't realize that one's diet has a considerable impact on the eyes. Read one of our many Visionworks eye health articles and share them with a friend. Loving our eyes means learning how to protect them.
Participate in the World Sight Day Photo Competition
Feeling creative? The IAPB World Sight Day Photo Competition is an opportunity to show off your photography skills and share what you see with the world. The IAPB judges are looking for images that capture what it means to have healthy vision and how good eye health creates a brighter future. By entering the World Sight Day Photo Competition, your photo becomes a big part of raising awareness for vision care! Put your creative eye to the test and share what #LoveYourEyes means to you.
