At Visionworks, we believe your eyes deserve the same level of care as the rest of your health. That’s why we follow the comprehensive eye exam guidelines recommended by the American Optometric Association (AOA). A complete eye exam goes beyond just checking your prescription—it plays a vital role in protecting your vision and detecting early signs of eye disease or other health conditions. Many eye and vision problems show little to no symptoms in their earliest stages. A regular comprehensive eye exam helps ensure potential issues are found and treated before they become serious, giving you the best chance to maintain clear and healthy vision for years to come.

What to Expect During a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Every patient’s eyes are unique, so your eye doctor will tailor your exam to your individual needs. A thorough exam may include the following:

Before Eye Exam

Prior to the exam, information is gathered about you either at the practice or digitally when scheduling online. This information helps the team best serve your individual needs. Information may include:

Eye Exam Begins

Exams typically begin with a series of tests designed to evaluate eye health. Some of these tests may be performed in a pre-test area by a trained technician.

Visual Acuity Testing

This test measures how clearly you see at various distances, often using a standard eye chart. Results are recorded as a fraction, such as 20/20 or 20/40, to indicate the sharpness of your vision.

Eye Focusing, Teaming & Movement

Clear vision depends on your eyes working together. These tests evaluate how well your eyes focus, track movement, and coordinate as a team—essential for reading, driving, and everyday tasks.

Preliminary Eye Function Tests

Your optometrist may perform a series of tests to check depth perception, color vision, side (peripheral) vision, eye muscle coordination, and how your pupils react to light.

Eye Health Evaluation

Using advanced technology, your optometrist will carefully examine the internal and external structures of your eyes. This may include dilation with eye drops to provide a clearer view of the retina and optic nerve. Measuring eye pressure is also standard to check for signs of glaucoma. A comprehensive eye health evaluation is critical as it can reveal hidden eye diseases or even systemic health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Corneal Curvature Measurement (Keratometry/Topography)

By measuring the curvature of your cornea—the clear outer surface of your eye—your doctor can ensure proper contact lens fitting and evaluate corneal health.

Note: Actual fitting for contact lenses is not part of a comprehensive eye examination, it is included with a contact lens eye exam.

Refraction Assessment

Using a phoropter, your doctor will determine the lens prescription needed to correct common vision issues like nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism. This process may include your feedback (“Which lens is clearer: one or two?”) to fine-tune the most accurate prescription.

Supplemental Testing (If Needed)

If initial results suggest additional concerns, your doctor may perform further tests for a more in-depth evaluation.

Why Comprehensive Eye Exams Matter

Early Detection

Many eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, can progress silently without symptoms. Regular exams give you the best defense against vision loss.

Whole-Body Health Clues

Eye exams can reveal early warning signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Clear, Comfortable Vision

Routine check-ups ensure your prescription is always up to date, whether for glasses, contact lenses, or both.

Your Vision, Our Priority

At the end of your exam, your Visionworks (or independent) optometrist will explain your results, answer your questions, and recommend the best treatment or corrective options for your lifestyle. If specialized care is needed, we’ll guide you to the right provider for additional treatment. Taking care of your eyes today helps protect your vision for tomorrow. Schedule your eye exam at Visionworks and experience expert care designed to keep your eyes healthy for life.
